Collection: AFRICAN COFFEE

We now provide an artisan coffee range from the African continent for coffee-lover's out there. If you haven't tried African coffee before, you have been missing out!

Our coffee's have been carefully selected and originate from Ethiopia and Rwanda.

Coffee Origin - Rwanda

Rwanda grows almost exclusively Bourbon arabica varietals. There are five distinct growing regions of Kivu, Virunga, Kizi Rift, Akagera and Muhazi most of which are 1,700 – 2000 metres above sea level. Coffee is Rwanda's fourth largest export and is produced by over 400,000 smallholders owning less than an acre each.

In the past it was a producer of low quality C-grade coffee and even this was very nearly destroyed by 1980's economic crash that saw the price of coffee collapse. This was followed by the terrible events of the 1994 genocide. Presently, Rwanda's coffee industry has recovered with strong backing from the government and now offers beautiful coffee. They can be either syrupy sweet with big mouthfeel or bright with berry flavours.

 Coffee Origin - Ethiopia

Ethiopia produces some of the best quality coffee available and is held in high esteem with coffee lovers. Production makes up 70% of all its earnings on export, with around 15 million Ethiopians working in the coffee industry.

Exciting flavours come from Ethiopian coffee and often have bright citrus acidity and floral aromas. Ripe fruit flavours can be present like bergamot or blueberry. The wide range of flavours found can be attributed to the high elevation of the 3 main growing regions Sidamo, Yirgacheffe and Harrar. With altitudes between 1400-2200 metres the coffee grows slower and denser meaning complex sugars have more time to develop in higher concentrations.
